Ebony Steelband has been performing at prestigious venues for over a decade. Most recently the band has performed on the Fifa World cup stage in Germany for the 2006 World Cup and in Delhi, India at the launch of the Cricket World Cup, which will be taking place in seven countries in the Caribbean in 2007. Ebony also performs at the Buckingham Palace at least twice per year. Touring more than 4 times a year and doing on average 4 performances per week around the UK, the band also does regular performances for corporate events, weddings, funerals birthday party’s etc.
The Millennium Volunteers (MV) project with young people aged 16-24 are also now doing regular performances and have so far performed at the Children’s Classic Concert at the Barbican Hall and at the Flora London Marathon. Their performance at the Smile Day concert in Trafalgar Square, to raise money for children with HIV, earned the band compliments for their performance by presenter Richard Blackwood, DJ Tim Westwood and singer Lisa Mafia! They also performed at the West End Live Show performing alongside the Lion King, Stomp, Mamma Mia etc.
Steelbands are also a great way for schools, colleges and universities to teach young people about the only new instrument invented this century which originates from the twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Through our interactive workshops, pupils will have an opportunity to actually play a steel procession instrument (the steelpan). The steelpan is a perfect instrument, as the basic skills are easy to learn and playing the instrument does not require any previous musical experience. It is possible for a group with any level of musical experience to accomplish a simple melody within a short period of time.
